Specialising in Women’s Health

Meet Dr Emma

Emma grew up and went to school in Swan Hill before moving to Melbourne to attend Monash University for medical school. She worked at Monash Health as a junior doctor in the surgical stream prior to finding her vocation in obstetrics and gynaecology. She took 11 years to complete the further 6 years training in this specialty due to having her children along the way. She worked at The Royal Womens’ Hospital, Box Hill Hospital and back in Bendigo during this time.

Upon finishing her training, she worked in Melbourne for about 18 months covering for a colleague in private practice on maternity leave, and being appointed specialist obstetrician at The Royal Women’s Hospital and as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Box Hill Hospitals overseeing the busy labour ward on her shift and caring for the highest risk pregnancies.

About 10 years ago Emma made the decision to move back to Bendigo to be near her parents and so that she could set up her own private practice at the Norfolk Centre with Dr Roessler. She also worked at Bendigo Health up until recently, when she needed time off to help her son as he finished school and started life as an adult with a disability.

Emma also has a teenage daughter who she takes on holidays at least once per year. She lives locally and is almost always available to care for her patients herself. In her spare time, she enjoys knitting, listening to audiobooks, going for walks and watching thrillers and romances on TV.

Our Approach

Each women comes to pregnancy with their own story.  Emma takes time to listen and get to know you and your family and work with you to deliver a healthy baby and a healthy mother in the way you want.

Our Core Values

At the Norfolk Centre and at SJOG we strive to provide an all inclusive pregnancy care experience for our patients and their families.  We aim to allow you to feel comfortable in that you know what your care involves and to work with Emma to individualise it to suit you.

Women’s Health

Emma is a general gynaecologist. Her interests include management of heavy, painful or irregular periods, contraception, peri-menopausal treatments, prolapse, pre-pregnancy counselling and infertility.

Emma does not do colposcopy (managment of abnormal pap smears) but her colleagues at the Norfolk Centre manage these conditions.  Similarly, she refers patients to her colleagues for IVF, but takes them back once they are pregnant.

She is also not doing much laproscopic surgery at the moment, having been very busy caring for her pregnant ladies.  She would often refer patients who will need complex key-hole surgery to one of her colleagues, but then continue with their gynaecological care afterward.

Prenatal & Postpartum

Dr Emma Buckland is an experienced obstetrician who enjoys managing both high and low risk pregnancies.  Whether you are a fit and healthy first time mother looking to deliver using hypnotherapy, or a lady with diabetes, having twins, or other complicated medical conditions Emma is knowledgable and skilled to care for you.  At SJOG we have a team consisting of physicians (ioncluding an obstetric physician), paediatricians, intensive care doctors and obstetric anaesthetists who work together to care for you.  Communication between team members is direct to allow everyone to know the plan.  I have links with local mental health providers and consider this an important part of my care.

We have had great outcomes managing many women with complicated medical backgrounds through pregnancy and delivery.  Obstetric emergencies are handled quickly and safely by our experienced team.  Access to theatre or blood bank is streamlined.

SJOG nursery is not as extensive as the one at Bendigo Health and if your baby is coming before 34 weeks gestation Emma may recommend we deliver the baby there instead.  Once the baby is stable transfer back to SJOG for ongoing care is arranged.
